AI Visibility
More people are asking ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews which business to call instead of typing a search into Google. Here is what actually makes an AI recommend one business over another, in plain terms.
At a glance
An AI assistant recommends a business when it can confidently resolve who that business is and trust what it finds about it: consistent information across the web, structured data that spells out what the business does and where, and enough independent mentions to corroborate it. Businesses without those signals simply do not come up, even if they are the best option in town.
Based on how generative engine optimization (GEO) and AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity actually work, and on applying this to my own business, Liquid Breathwork.Traditional SEO ranks pages. AI search engines cite sources and hand back a name. That is a different game, and most local businesses have not started playing it yet, which is exactly why the ones that show up now tend to keep showing up.
Google ranks pages and hands you ten links to sort through yourself. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity do something different: they read across many sources, decide who they trust, and hand back a name, sometimes two. If your business is not one of the names, the person asking never sees you, and you never see that it happened. There is no bounce in your analytics for a lead you never got a shot at.
The deciding factor is not how good the business actually is. It is whether the AI can confidently answer a quieter question first: who is this, is the information about them consistent everywhere it appears, and does anything outside the business's own website back that up. That question is called entity resolution, and it is the whole game.
A handful of things carry most of the weight, in roughly this order of impact for a business starting from nothing:
Consistent NAP. Your business name, address, and phone number need to match, word for word, everywhere they appear: your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, directories, everywhere. Inconsistent details split you into what looks like two different businesses to an AI trying to resolve who you are.
Structured data (schema markup). This is a layer of code on your website that states, in a format machines can read directly, what your business is, what it does, and where it serves. It removes the guesswork an AI would otherwise have to do by reading your page like a human.
An llms.txt file. A short, plain-text file at your site's root that summarizes who you are, what you offer, and your key pages, written for AI crawlers to read directly instead of parsing your whole site.
Independent corroboration. Reviews, directory listings, and mentions on sites other than your own. AI engines weight third-party confirmation heavily, because anyone can say anything about themselves on their own website.
Recency. Content that has actually been updated recently gets cited more often than content that has sat untouched for years. A dated, real update matters more than a fresh coat of paint.
The only real way to know is to ask the AI the same question your customers would, and see who comes back. Guessing does not help here. I built a free tool that runs those exact questions against ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews for your specific business and industry, and hands you the results.

Building and maintaining those signals on purpose, instead of hoping they line up by accident, is what generative engine optimization (GEO) actually is. It is the same work I did on my own business first: Liquid Breathwork went from as few as 17 clicks a month at its low point to a peak of 1,647,Google Search Console, Feb to Jun 2026. and is now cited by AI answers 684 times in 82 days.Microsoft Clarity, Mar 1 to May 21 2026.
