How long does local SEO take to work?

How long does local SEO take to work? Plan on a few days to a few weeks for the first fixes to go live, and 4 months to a year for steady calls. Here's the timeline piece by piece, and what moves each one.

At a glance

Local SEO works in layers. Business Profile edits usually go live within days, new pages usually get crawled within a few days to a few weeks, and steady calls from Maps and search usually take 4 months to a year. None of it is guaranteed, and your competition sets the pace more than anything else.

Ranges from Google's help pages and video, checked October 5, 2026. A guide, not a promise.

How long does SEO take to get results?

For a local service business, expect early signs in the first one to three months and more calls somewhere between 4 months and a year. In its 2017 How to Hire an SEO video, Google said an SEO will usually need 4 months to a year to implement improvements and then see potential benefit.

Where you land in that range depends less on who you hire than on three things:

The first is your competition. A garage door company in Phoenix is up against dozens of established profiles, while a septic pumper in a small town might face a handful.

The second is your starting point. An established profile with reviews moves faster than a brand-new one.

The third is how fast the fixes get made. The clock starts when the changes go live, not when you sign.

One factor no SEO can change is distance. Google says local results come down to relevance, distance, and popularity. If a searcher is across town, the shop down their street starts with an edge.

What does the local SEO timeline look like for each piece of work?

Most of the answer to "how long does local SEO take to work?" sits in this table. Each piece runs on its own clock, and the slow ones bring the calls.

The workHow long it takesWhat moves it
Verifying your Business Profile Google says reviews take up to 5 business days. If you verify by postcard, most codes arrive within 14 days. Phone, email or video verification skips the mail. Don't edit your name, address or category while you wait. Google says the code won't work if you do.
Fixing your profile Google reviews your changes before they go live. In my experience, that's hours to a few days. One careful round of edits (categories, services, hours, photos) beats changing things every week.
New service pages Crawling takes a few days to a few weeks, and Google says asking doesn't guarantee a page gets in at all. Ranking comes after that. Link each page from your menu, request indexing in Search Console, and fill it with your real services and photos of real jobs.
Reviews Months. You keep asking after every job, so it never really finishes. How many jobs you finish and whether you ask every time. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking.
Map pack and search rankings Usually 4 months to a year. Google's 2017 How to Hire an SEO video gives that range for SEO work to show potential benefit, not for a specific ranking. How crowded your trade is nearby, and how your profile, reviews and pages stack up against the top three.

What should I see in month one versus month six?

Work in month one, movement after that, calls last. Here's how I tell progress from stalling:

  • Month 1: a verified, complete Business Profile, Search Console set up in your name, and a written list of what changed on your site. No ranking jump yet. That's normal.
  • Months 2 and 3: new pages indexed, and impressions starting to climb in Search Console. Your profile's performance view counts views, calls and website clicks, so watch those too.
  • Months 4 to 12: more calls and form fills from Maps and search.

Impressions move before calls do. If month four arrives with flat impressions and no list of changes, the work probably isn't happening. Here's how to tell if your SEO company is doing anything.

I did this on my own Breathwork business first, and the order held: fixes, then impressions, then calls. That's one business, not a promise for yours.

Is doing a local SEO worth it?

Yes, if one new customer covers a few months of fees and you can give it a year. Not yet, if you need calls this month (ads are faster) or your schedule is already full.

The trade-off is time. Ads stop the day you stop paying. The pages, reviews and profile you build stay up after the work is done.

For budgets, see how much you should pay for SEO services. I quote my own work on a free call, after I've looked at who you're up against, because that sets both the price and the pace.

Questions owners ask about SEO timing

How long does local SEO take to start?

The work starts in week one: profile fixes, verification and the first page changes. Calls come later, usually somewhere between 4 months and a year.

How much should I pay for local SEO?

Your market sets it more than anything. I break down what each budget buys in how much should I pay for SEO services.

Is local SEO dead now with AI?

No. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, so the same profile, pages and reviews feed both. I cover the AI side in AI SEO services.

Can I pay Google to rank faster in Maps?

No. Google says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads can buy a spot at the top, but that's a paid placement, not your ranking.

Will you guarantee when I'll rank?

No, and nobody honest will. Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking. I commit to the work, the dates it goes live, and showing you what changed.
