How Much Does AI Search Optimization Cost?

If you've typed “how much does AI search optimization cost” into Google, the published answer for a small business runs from $29 a month for a tracking tool to five figures a month for an agency program. I do this work for local service businesses, and much of the expensive end is work a good local SEO already does.

At a glance

Mission Ctrl's price guide puts AI search optimization at $500 to $3,000+ a month as an ongoing service, or $1,000 to $5,000+ as a one-time project. Large agency programs run $8,000 to $35,000 a month. For most local service businesses it overlaps heavily with SEO, so it should be an add-on, not a second full bill.

Ranges: price guides from two agencies that sell this work, Mission Ctrl and Fuel Online, both updated September 2026 and checked October 4, 2026. The advice is my own.
  • OtterlyAI, a tool that tracks what AI says about you, starts at $29 a month
  • No neutral survey of AI search pricing exists yet that I've found, so every range here comes from someone selling the service

How much does AI search optimization cost per month?

Four different things get sold under this name: a tool you run yourself, a one-time fix, a monthly service, or a full agency program.

What you're buyingPublished price
Tracking tool you run$29 to $489 a month ($25 for the entry plan billed yearly). Shows whether ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot mention you for the questions you pick. Gemini and Google AI Mode tracking cost extra. You still make the fixes yourself; I'd plan on a few hours a month for that. OtterlyAI pricing
One-time project$1,000 to $5,000 or more. An audit of how you show up in Google and AI search, plus fixing unclear website content, structured data and inconsistent business info across the web. Mission Ctrl
Small-business retainer$500 to $3,000 or more a month. The project work, plus new content that answers customer questions, reputation and mention building, and monitoring how AI search describes you. Mission Ctrl
Agency program$2,500 a month at entry level, $8,000 to $35,000 a month for full programs. Fuel Online says most mid-size businesses start at $4,000 to $8,000 a month, so these tiers are built for bigger companies than a one-truck trade. Fuel Online

Prices as published by each provider, checked October 4, 2026. Mission Ctrl serves Alberta and British Columbia and does not state a currency, so treat its rows as a ballpark.

The spread is huge because one label covers very different work. At the bottom it's a dashboard. At the top it's a content team publishing every week for a national brand.

For a one-location plumber or painter, a fair standalone price sits inside Mission Ctrl's $500 to $3,000 monthly band. As an add-on to an SEO retainer you already pay, it should cost well under a second retainer, and Ahrefs puts the average local SEO retainer at $1,557 a month. Anything past the low thousands is paying for scale you don't need.

What makes AI search optimization cost more or less?

Three things move the quote:

  • Each extra city or storefront needs its own profile, pages and checks.
  • A Phoenix plumber is up against far more competitors than a plumber in a small town.
  • A site that needs rebuilding, or a pile of missing or mismatched directory listings, adds hours.

A one-truck painter with a decent site sits near the bottom on all three. A three-location HVAC company with an old site sits near the top.

Is AI search work a separate bill from SEO?

Mostly, no. Google's own documentation says "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary" (Google Search Central).

ChatGPT and Gemini pull from the web too. ChatGPT runs a crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to find sites for its search answers (OpenAI), and Gemini can ground its answers in Google Search (Google). So they reward the same basics: a clear website, consistent business details, real reviews, and other sites that mention you. If someone already does solid SEO for you, most of the AI work is already in that bill.

A few pieces are extra:

  • Asking ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI who they recommend, and logging the answers
  • Opening each key page with a short, direct answer AI tools can quote
  • Listings on the directories and review sites those tools read

That's real work, but it's an add-on. If you're quoted two full retainers for overlapping work, ask what each one changes on your site.

For the short version of what the service is, see my post on AI SEO services. For regular SEO budgets, see how much I'd pay for SEO services.

What should you see each month for the money?

You should see who AI names for your service, checked live, and what changed on your site because of it.

Ask for this each monthRed flag
The questions your customers actually ask, like "best emergency plumber in Mesa"A keyword list with no real customer questions on it
Who ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI name for each one todayA "visibility score" that never shows the actual answers
The specific changes made: pages, profile fixes, new listings"Ongoing optimization" with nothing you can point to
Calls and form leads countedOnly "mentions" or "impressions"

Nobody controls what these tools say. Anyone who guarantees ChatGPT will recommend you is guessing, and that belongs on any list of SEO company red flags.

I tested this on my own Breathwork business before I offered it to clients. Liquid Breathwork went from 17 to 1,647 Google clicks a month (Google Search Console). The steps carry over to a service-area trade: a clean profile, pages that open with the answer, and consistent listings.

That's one business, not a promise. Read the Liquid Breathwork case study for what I changed.

When is it not worth paying for yet?

Hold off on a retainer if any of these are true:

  • Your Google Business Profile has old hours, few reviews or the wrong service area. Fix that first. It's free, and it feeds Google Maps and the AI answers built on Google.
  • Your website doesn't say what you do and where. That's a website problem before it's an SEO problem.
  • You just want to know where you stand. Ask ChatGPT yourself, or try the $29 tracking plan above for a month.

How do I see where my business stands in AI search?

Start by seeing where you stand today. In my free Website + AI Audit, I ask ChatGPT and Gemini the questions your customers would and note who they recommend.

For a one-location trade business, the AI part rides on top of SEO instead of being a second retainer. My rule of thumb: if the AI add-on costs more than the SEO work it sits on, ask what it changes that the SEO doesn't. I quote on a free call after I've looked at your market and your competitors, rather than publishing prices. You can read about my AI visibility service (generative engine optimization) before we talk.

What else do owners ask about AI search costs?

Is AI search cheaper than regular SEO?

As an add-on, it should be. Most of the work overlaps with SEO, so it should cost less than the SEO it sits on. For comparison, Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers (updated August 2024) put the average local SEO retainer at $1,557 a month. I break down what each budget buys in how much should I pay for SEO services.

How much does it cost per AI search?

Nothing per search for your customer, and you can't pay to be the organic recommendation. You can pay for an ad in ChatGPT, kept separate from its answers, or in Google's AI Overviews, but that's advertising, not optimization. Your optimization cost is the tracking tool or the service that works on getting you named.

What is the best AI for search engine optimization?

Two different things. The AI tools your customers ask are ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews, so those are the answers worth showing up in. To check them, a tracking tool like OtterlyAI records what ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot say for the questions you pick. No AI tool does the work for you. The website, profile and review fixes still have to be made.

Is SEO dead now with AI?

No. Google says the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features like AI Overviews and AI Mode. AI tools rely on the same website, profile and review signals that SEO builds.

How much does AI search optimization cost for a year?

Mission Ctrl's published range of $500 to $3,000 or more a month works out to about $6,000 to $36,000 or more a year, plus any one-time project.
